The permit, the circuit, and the one cost we refuse to guess at

These are the lines that turn a tidy equipment quote into a surprise. Two of them can be sourced properly and are below in full. The third cannot, and this page explains at length why an empty cell is the right answer rather than a gap someone forgot to fill.

One jurisdiction, read in full

Permit fees are set municipally, published as PDFs, revised on their own schedules, and structured differently in every city — some per unit, some by valuation, some by inspection count. There is no national dataset. Rather than print a made-up national average, this site reads real fee schedules one at a time and publishes only what it has actually read. Today that is one city.

That first row is worth dwelling on because of how specific it is. The schedule does not merely have a generic mechanical line; it has a row that literally reads “Air Handler, Mini-Split, Humidifier” with a per-item fee and a reduced fee for each additional unit. That structure tells you something the dollar figure alone does not: in that city a multi-zone job is charged per indoor unit, so a five-head system costs materially more to permit than a single-zone one. Your city may charge a flat fee, or by job value, and the shape of the fee matters as much as its size.

For orientation only, a national cost guide puts a mini-split permit somewhere between $250 and $400[3]. That range brackets the verified figure above, which is mildly reassuring, but it is a survey rather than a schedule and this site never adds it silently to a total.

The dedicated circuit

The outdoor unit needs its own protected circuit. If your panel has an open pair of slots and the run is short, this is an hour of an electrician’s time. If it does not, the job stops being an HVAC job. Published range: $250 to $900, with a stated national average of $650[7]. That midpoint is the source’s own average rather than our arithmetic, which is why it carries a sourced label instead of a derived one.

Two things push it toward the top of that range and both are visible before anyone quotes. The first is distance: the further the outdoor unit sits from the panel, the more cable and the more fishing through finished walls. The second is what the walls are made of — running new cable through a finished, insulated, plaster-over-lath wall is a different job from running it through an open basement ceiling, and the difference is hours, not materials.

The cost this site will not print

If the panel is full, someone has to make room, and that is where our two sources fall apart. One puts a 200-amp main panel upgrade at $1,300 to $2,500 [8]. The other, in a guide specifically about mini-split installation, puts replacing an electrical panel at $400 to $800[10]. Those are not overlapping bands with a bit of spread between them; the top of one is barely above the bottom of the other.

We do not know which is right and we are not going to pretend the average of them is a number. It is entirely possible the two are describing different jobs — swapping a panel in place against a full service upgrade with a new meter base and a utility disconnect are wildly different pieces of work that get called the same thing in casual writing. That ambiguity is itself the finding, and the honest output is both figures, the disagreement stated, and no entry in any total on this site.

There is a cheaper middle path worth asking your electrician about: a subpanel, published at $500 to $1,700[12]. If the service entrance has capacity and the main panel has simply run out of physical slots, a subpanel adds slots without touching the service. That is a common and much less disruptive answer than replacing the panel, and it is the question to ask before accepting a service-upgrade quote.

Unresolved source conflict. This site does not pick a winner and does not put a panel upgrade in any total. The installed-cost worksheet lists a panel upgrade as an explicit exclusion for exactly this reason: a total that silently absorbs a number this uncertain is worse than a total that tells you what it left out.


Questions people actually ask about this

Do you need a permit to install a mini-split?

In most places yes, because the work is both electrical and refrigerant. A licensed installer normally pulls it and it appears on your invoice rather than as a separate bill — which is exactly why it is worth asking whether it was actually pulled.

How much is a mini-split permit?

In the one jurisdiction whose published schedule we read and verified, $176.57 for the first unit and $52.39 for each additional one. Everywhere else this site prints no figure, because we have not read those schedules.

Does a mini-split need its own circuit?

The outdoor unit does. If the panel has no spare 240-volt slot, an electrician has to make room, and that is a second trade on the job rather than a line item the HVAC crew absorbs.

Will I need to upgrade my electrical panel?

Possibly, and this site will not put a number on it. Our two cost sources disagree by roughly threefold on what a panel upgrade costs, and averaging two figures that far apart would manufacture a precision neither one supports. Get an electrician to look at your panel.
